Digital Cameras
To work with Steel Software, a digital camera must support the MSC protocol which means that it must show up as a drive letter inside of "My Computer" on your computer.
Other cameras can be used, ones that show up as a connected digital device, but require a 3rd party software to make them work with SDS and SSCS.
You can purchase the necessary PTP Drive software to make non-MSC cameras work from here. http://www.ptpdrive.com/index.html
Background info on digital camera protocols.
Media or Picture Transfer Protocol (MTP/PTP)
PTP allows the transfer of images from digital cameras to a computer without the need for a device driver. MTP is an extended version of PTP and is designed to allow more types of devices like digital audio players and portable media players to communicate with a computer system. PTP and MTP allow the user to transfer images without installing any other software. Nikon digital cameras have been compatible with these communication protocols since their introduction.
Mass Storage Class (MSC)
When a Mass Storage Class compatible camera is connected to a computer, the operating system will recognise it as a removable drive and reveal the file and folder structure. The drawback of MSC is that it required specific device drivers to be installed for the camera to communicate with the computer. This is not the case with MTP and PTP.
